Press Release

Prishtina, 19 June 2018 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kosovo has received with concern the news about the prohibition of entry to Serbia for the philosopher and critic Shkelzen Maliqi, at the Kosovo border in Merdare, wherein the Serbian Border Police did not provide him any information or reasoning for their action.

Shkëzlen Maliqi, along with the travelling group, would be as participants of a cultural activity in Belgrade, in which the publication “20 Vjet Përtej/Godina Preko/Years Beyond” would be launched as a chronological summary of 20 years of cultural cooperation among cultural stakeholders from Kosovo and Serbia.

We would like to emphasise that such cultural activities are extraordinary contributors to interstate and inter-social awareness, and as such they should be supported and encouraged rather more, and not on to the contrary by prohibiting their participation. Moreover, Mr Maliqi is one of the best-known publicists of the region, promoting reconciliation and multicultural values in the region.

The treatment towards Mr Maliqi indicates once more the destructive approach of Serbia, which, apart from not being coherent with the spirit of normalisation process between the two states, continues to ignore the fundamental and principled policies of the European Union, such as good neighbourhood and freedom of movement.

We request from Serbia to bring to an end the discriminatory policies and inhuman treatment towards the Kosovo citizen, in order to create a new cooperation opportunity and space for all of us without any distinction, which could also contribute in achieving full normalization between the two countries.
