Mr. Hoxhaj emphasizes the importance of municipalities for foreign policy at the conference on City Diplomacy

Prizren, 14 April 2017 – Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Association of Kosovo Municipalities, has organized a one-day conference on the topic: “The City Diplomacy: governance, local development and foreign relations”.

Present at this conference were mayors, ambassadors accredited to Kosovo, ambassadors of Kosovo abroad, as they discussed about the ways of cooperation between Kosovo cities and the different cities in Europe and beyond.

In his speech addressed to participants, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Enver Hoxhaj, said that international cooperation of municipalities is important aspect of Kosovo’s foreign policy. He added that the MFA is available to the Municipalities to assist in the process of concluding cooperation or twinning agreements, in the function of increasing the opportunities for the citizens of Kosovo.

“The purpose of this conference is to have a deeper exchange of ideas, to reflect on how to have better coordination on foreign policy, and from the findings deriving from this conference, to make an action plan with specific and measurable goals in order to have an easier development of international cooperation of the municipalities”, said Minister Hoxhaj.

On the other hand, the President of the Association of Kosovo Municipalities, Naim Ismajli, has estimated that municipalities may have a positive impact on diplomacy.

“Cooperation between different cities, the twinning agreements as well as memberships in various international organizations have increased the contribution of municipalities on foreign policy”, estimated Mr. Ismajli.

In addition to participants from Kosovo, experiences in municipality governance were also shared by Arbjan Mazniku, Deputy Mayor of Tirana.

In other panels was discussed about the promotion of local tourism and engagement of cities in regional and international initiatives and associations. Today’s conference was organized as a continuation of the activities deriving from the Ambassadors Conference organized in December last year.
