Minister Hyseni’s meetings in the European Parliament

During his stay in Strasbourg, Kosovar Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Skender Hyseni had a series of meetings with Euro deputies from the EU countries.

Minister Hyseni has met with Jacek Saryusz- Wolski, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament and informed him on the developments, political, economic and security situation in Kosovo, since the declaration of independence on February 17, 2008.

The Foreign Minister Hyseni has emphasized that “Kosovo has marked significant progresses on democratic institution-building and its functionality to fully serve all the citizens of the independent Kosovo, regardless of the ethnicity they belong to”.

Minister Hyseni has also informed Mr. Saryusz- Wolski that Kosovo institutions are making the efforts to accommodate the members of ethnic communities, in particular Serbian community in Kosovo.

Minister Hyseni has requested from Mr. Saryusz- Wolski, as the Chairman of the Commission, and from the European Union to continue the engagement on helping Kosovo institutions on their path of gaining more recognitions for the Republic of Kosovo as independent and sovereign country.

An important part of discussion has focused on the spread and full functionality of EULEX, Minister Hyseni express his believe that EULEX will succeed to complete its own agenda in the realms of law and security in Kosovo, emphasizing that it is important that EULEX become fully functional in the north of Kosovo, where Serbian parallel structures, supported by Belgrade, are active.


Mr. Saryusz-Wolski has commended Minister Hyseni for the achievements and has promised to help Kosovo in the future. He also commended Kosovo Government for making the efforts to accommodate the communities, asking to further continue these efforts.

In the continuation of the activities in Strasbourg, the Foreign Minister has also met Mr. Jose Ignacio Salafranca Sanchez-Neyra, the Coordinator of the EPP-ED Group in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament. Minister Hyseni has informed Mr. Salafranca Sanchez-Neyra on the dynamics of the work of the institutions of Kosovo and their cooperation with EULEX, regional initiatives and the relations with neighboring countries.

A significant place in the discussion took the dynamics of the process for recognition of Kosovo as independent and sovereign country. Both interlocutors agreed that the process has gone well, and Kosovo has achieved a large number of recognitions, among them many countries with extraordinary influence on the economy, the European politics and wider. Minister Hyseni, on this occasion, has requested to intensify the efforts to convince five member states of the EU that have not recognized Kosovo yet.

Furthermore, Minster Hyseni had a meeting with Mr. Hannes Swoboda, Vice-Chairman of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament. Being familiar with the situation in Kosovo, Mr. Swoboda has commended Minster Hyseni and Kosovo institutions on the achieved progress during the first year of the independence. Minister Hyseni has shown appreciation to Mr. Swoboda for the continuous support to the developments in Kosovo.

Minister Hyseni has mentioned the cooperation with neighboring countries and regional initiatives, Minister Hyseni has also emphasized that the cooperation with neighbors is a must, including Serbia, in order to fight many harmful phenomena in the region such as organized crime, corruption, etc.

At the end of the visit, Minister Hyseni met with Mr. Martin Kamp the Secretary General of the EPP-ED in the European Parliament, the topic of discussion was mainly the economic issue and the perspectives towards the economic development.
