Prishtina, November 26, 2015 - American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo, within the Global Entrepreneurship Week in Kosovo 2015 organized the roundtable with the topics such as digital economy, benefits and implications for economic development, society and the private sector.
During this roundtable it was said that despite the high rate of internet penetration, the highest compared to other countries in the region, statistics show that internet is mainly used for social media networks, for which reason the country fails to capitalize this penetration rate of the internet for the development of digital entrepreneurship, and consequently for an accelerated economic development.
Mërgim Cahani, member of the Board of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce, spoke of his experience in establishing a web search engine platform in Albanian and the benefits this brings to Albanian users compared to the use of other search engines which do not include local contexts and features.
Whereas, the Executive Director of the Innovation Centre Kosovo, Uranik Begu, spoke about the numerous potentials that Kosovo youth offers in strengthening the base of the digital entrepreneurship and the contribution that the institution he leads has provided in supporting the start-ups and young entrepreneurs in creating products and providing original services, some of which have successfully penetrated the global markets.
Gëzim Begolli, from Httpool company spoke about the high level of awareness private sector companies have regarding the benefits arising from digital connectivity and especially digital marketing in facilitating business operations and promoting their products and services, compared to traditional marketing methods.
On the other hand, Kosovo must start preparing to benefit from these developments, considering the fact that by 2025 internet based technology is expected to take extraordinary proportions worldwide and reach the value of 6.2 trillion American dollars, while the overall economic impact of Internet of Things will be between 4 and 11 trillion U.S. dollars.
For this to happen, participants in this round table urged the responsible institutions to approve as soon as possible, and begin with the implementation of the Strategy for Information and Technology Development.
